Is It OK to Eat Clam Chowder While Pregnant?

Answer

Food safety is extremely important during pregnancy. During this time food will affect you and the development of your child differently than at other time. Pregnant women are more susceptible to infections, because of their lowered immune systems. Infections and incidents such as food poisoning can have a very detrimental effect on the child and mother to be. It is important to eat foods that are well cooked in order to prevent bacterial infections, such as E.coli and Salmonella. Clams and oysters are on that list of foods to be wary of and you have to make sure they are cooked to 145 degrees F. Clam chowder utilizes cooked clams and is therefore usually safe. However, be aware that if you go to a restaurant and they use old clam chowder or do not cook it to a high enough temperature, it could make you very sick.
