According to CNN, "The Blair Witch Project" is not based on a true story. The premise of the film was created by Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick.

Before the film was seen at film festivals, Sanchez and Myrick launched a website with information surrounding the story. Sanchez and Myrick went as far as posting drawings and journals discussing the history and sightings of the Blair Witch. To make the film seem more authentic, the actors in the film chose not to do any press before the film was sold. While "The Blair Witch Project" was marketed as a true story and filmed in documentary style, the entire premise of the film was fictional.
