Messier 86 (also known by the designation NGC 4406) is a lenticular galaxy located in the constellation Virgo. It can easily be located in the sky by looking between Beta Leonis and Epsilon Virginis. Messier 86 is notable for having the highest blue shift of all the Messier objects, moving towards the Milky Way at the astonishing rate of 244 km/s.

It was discovered on March 18, 1781 by Charles Messier and published in an update to his seminal work Catalogue of Nebulae and Star Clusters.
