MC Lyte, born Lana Michelle Moorer on October 11,1971, is a female hip-hop artist born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She is the first female rapper to release a solo album; "Lyte as a Rock" was released in 1988.

MC Lyte is known by hip-hop aficionados as being the greatest female rapper of hip-hop history. MC Lyte is known for her superior lyrical and storytelling skills, and her versatility has given her a plethora of hits, including "Paper Thin," "Poor Georgie," "Cappucino," "Cold Rock a Party" and "Ruffneck." Her first album, "Lyte as a Rock," featured the breakout hit "Paper Thin," where she asserted that declarations of romance directed her way went "in one ear, and right out the other," as well as "I Cram to Understand You" which told the story of a relationship failing due to one's crack addiction. MC Lyte has been nominated for a Grammy twice, and she is the first solo female rap artist with a gold single. Her diary was inducted into the Smithsonian Institution's exhibition "Hip-Hop Won't Stop: The Beat, The Rhymes, The Life" on February 2006. MC Lyte continues to perform musically, and she is also an active actress, host and mentor.
