What are the McDonald's cartoon characters called?

Answer

While there have been more than 20 different inhabitants of McDonaldland, the best known are Ronald McDonald, Hamburglar, Grimace, Mayor McCheese and Officer Big Mac. Other characters include Captain Crook, Birdie the Early Bird, the Fry Kids and a pair of talking trash cans.

The character of Ronald McDonald debuted on television in 1963, played by Willard Scott. In 1971, the first McDonaldland-themed commercials appeared, featuring Ronald and a cast of puppets and costumed characters. Most of the commercials showed some villainous character, such as Hamburglar, trying to steal food items, only to be foiled by Ronald and his friends. Between 1998 and 2001, the McDonaldland characters appeared in a series of animated videos called "The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald." Since 2000, the McDonaldland commercials have been phased out of McDonald's advertising campaigns, though the characters still appear in McDonald's play areas and on some merchandise.
