What is an external sd/mmc memory and what is it's use in a digital camcorder?

Normally you need an SD/MMC memory card to store the video content too but some video cameras come with built in memory but these are quite uncommon. Although I could not say exactly without knowing the model I would imagine you would need an SD/MMC
