# Newton's First Law of Motion?

Isaac Newton came up with three laws of motion. Newton's first law of motion is that 'Every object in a state of uniform motion remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it'. The second law of motion is that 'Force equals mass times acceleration. Acceleration and force are vectors. The vectors are going in the same direction'. The final law of motion is that 'For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction'.
Newton's first law of motion states that an object in a state of rest or uniform motion will remain in that state unless an external force is applied.
This is normally taken as the definition of inertia. If there is no net force acting on an object then the object will maintain a constant velocity. If that velocity is zero, then the object remains at rest.
