Why are there fireworks in NYC now?

There are a number of regular fireworks displays in New York City every year. The biggest displays are the Macy's Fireworks Spectacular on the Fourth of July and the New Year's Eve display at Times Square.

In addition to the famous Times Square display, there are also New Year's displays at several other locations around the city, including Brooklyn's Prospect Park, Central Park and New York Harbor. Many smaller events also have fireworks displays. A list of upcoming events that have been issued fireworks permits is available at the City of New York website (under the Fireworks Display Information section).
