Though they are more commonly discussed in mathematics, parabolas are also seen in the natural world. Without any outside help, some natural occurrences simply take on the symmetry of a parabola all on their own. For instance, when a ball is thrown in the air, its natural path up and back down again, which is controlled by the pull of gravity, is considered parabolic.
