How many dialects are there in the Philippines?

Answer

About 154 distinct dialects have been identified in the Philippines. The country has eight major dialects -- Bikol, Cebuano, Hiligaynon (Ilonggo), Ilocano, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Tagalog and Waray -- but many linguists consider these major dialects to be separate languages.

Filipino Tagalog is the official language of the Philippines, and English is taught in schools and considered by many to be an official language. However, depending on the method of classification, there are as many as 120 to 175 languages spoken in the Philippines. Linguists studying and classifying Philippine languages often find it challenging to distinguish between a dialect and a unique language.
