During the contemporary period, Philippine literature was focused more on socializing and dealing with love. There were a lot of stories about friendship and finding the love of their lives. A lot of the Filipinos then also wrote in Spanish since it was taught to them by their previous colonizers, the Spaniards.

Contemporary means "right now" or in the living present. So, in a sense, writers at the time of the French Revolution (Victor Hugo, Balzac, etc) would be contemporary writers
