Radiation shielding is vital to survival of anyone with an increased risk of radiation exposure. It is also known as radiological protection. Radiation shielding is used to protect the environment as well as everyday citizens from ionizing radiation. Electromagnetic and particle radiation are two sources stemming from ionized radiation that people may come into contact with unknowingly on a daily basis. There are three separate groups that must be considered individually. There are public radiation protection, medical radiation protection, and occupational radiation protection. Legal exposure limits are set for each group to reduce the time exposed, the distance of exposure and shielding to absorb the source. The biological shield or radiation shielding is set into place around the reactor or other source of radiation to make levels safe.
