Balkan history has been impacted by its geography. The Balkans are a mountainous region in Southeast Europe. The mountains create a northern border which lent itself to underdevelopment and isolation. This in turn made the Balkans easy prey for invasions. As a result the Balkans are a very diverse region where many cultures, languages and religions have come together to create a unique mixture.
