How does the body remove gas from the stomach?

Answer

The American Gastroenterological Association explains that gas in the upper digestive system is usually belched out via the mouth or passed into the lower digestive tract where it is eventually expelled via the anus. According to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, gas may also be consumed by intestinal bacteria or absorbed into the blood stream.

The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders states that gas is present in all human digestive systems and enters the digestive tract when air is swallowed. Gas can also result from intestinal chemistry, the digestion by bacteria of food sources in the intestines, or the back-passage of dissolved gasses in the blood.

The American Gastroenterological Association states that most gas is made up of atmospheric gasses that have been swallowed. This gas primarily contains nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen. While these swallowed gasses must eventually be expelled, they do not produce an odor.

Some gas has an objectionable odor when it is expelled. The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders explains that bacteria, which consume large amounts of hydrogen gas inside the intestines, often cause this. As a part of the metabolic function of these organisms, they produce methane- and sulfur-laden gases, which have a bad odor.
