Substances That Melt Ice?

Answer

There are a number of known substances that melt ice. Unfortunately, though, these substances are also known to be capable of damaging the soil and ground that lie under the ice, of course, some more than others. Nevertheless, these substances include road salt, calcium chloride, fertilizer, sand, and unused cat litter. All of these products can be found at the local hardware store or retailer, in addition to the pet supply store (pertaining to the cat litter).
