In the Biblical story of Abraham and Isaac Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice his son Isaac. This action symbolized his devotion to God alone since although he loved his son he was willing to give him up. Ultimately before he actually performed the sacrifice God told him to stop and the actual act was not necessary. This was a test of his devotion.
