Symbolism in Children's Literature?

Answer

There is symbolism present in almost every example of children's literature that has been written to appeal to readers older than those just learning their alphabet and how sentences connect. The books by Dr. Seuss use symbolism extensively. Even fairy tales such as Cinderella rely on symbolism to teach children about society. In Cinderella, the wicked stepmother and step sisters symbolize how unfair, judgmental, and cruel society can be. As children grow into reading longer and more complicated works of literature, the symbolism in these stories also reflects more complex and mature issues.
