The history of Gothic Architecture dates back to 12th century, during medieval European history. It's characteristic because of the introduction of stained-glass windows, gargoyles on castles, flying buttresses, tall spires and pointed arches. The title 'Gothic' was alluded to the barbaric Goths or Visgoths who defeated the Roman empire. This also meant abandonment of the classical Romanesque lines and proportions.
