What are the National Day Care Standards?

Answer

The National Day Care Standards are part of a British policy initiative that provides minimum standards for services that offer childcare and education for children up to the age of 8. All day cares, nurseries, pre-schools and other institutions that provide childcare outside of the home must comply with the standards, whether they operate on a paid or volunteer basis.

According to the Day Care and Child Minding Regulations of 2003, the largest restriction imposed by the National Day Care Standards is a prohibition on use of corporal punishment against children. Any day care provider that is caught using corporal punishment has their day care license revoked. Practicing child care without a license is illegal in the UK. The National Day Care Standards also lay out a chain of command for reporting and investigating possible violations.

The National Day Care Standards of 2003 are an amendment to the 1989 Children Act, which outlines a number of laws related to the health and welfare of children in the UK. The full text of the Children Act contains provisions about general care and supervision of children, the responsibilities of parents and guardians and the welfare of children when they are being taken care of outside of the home.
