What Caused the Reign of Terror?

Answer

The Reign of Terror (September 5, 1793 - July 27, 1794) was a period of the French Revolution in which tens of thousands of people were executed without trial or due process. The French revolutionary government was at war abroad, and faced considerable opposition domestically to the sweeping changes it was making to French society. In order to deal with these problems, the Committee of Public Safety was established, with broad powers. The Committee quickly began to use arrest and execution as a means of dealing with its political enemies.
