A car can smoke due to various reasons. If the smoke is blue in color, then the car is burning oil and this can be due to valve stem seals, worn rings, plugged PCV valve, overstayed oil or level of oil is too high. Black smoke that smells like gas, could be caused by spark plugs, the ignition or wrong mixture in the carburetor if a car has one. White smoke with no real smell, the head gasket is most likely blown. This may be caused by overheating of the engine that causing the oil to mix with water.
