What causes a person to lose his or her voice?

Answer

Laryngitis is a condition wherein the larynx becomes inflamed and severe hoarseness or loss of voice occurs. It is caused by irritants, excessive yelling, cold and influenza, according to C-Health. It is also sometimes a symptom of pneumonia, bronchitis and measles.

When a person has acute laryngitis, his voice becomes croaky or he loses his voice temporarily, says C-Health. Many people also feel a rawness or tickling sensation in the throat. There are various factors and conditions that cause inflammation in the larynx, such as too much yelling, viral infections and bacterial infections. When a person experiences other symptoms like fever, throat pain and general aches in the body, the laryngitis is most likely due to a viral infection.

C-Health explains that hoarseness may also possibly be part of an allergic reaction. Exposure to irritants, such as cigarette smoke, causes laryngitis. This condition typically improves when a person avoids the source of inflammation and rests his voice.

Hoarseness or loss of voice that occurs for more than a week and comes back over time is called chronic laryngitis. Chronic laryngitis may also involve permanent alterations in the lining of the throat. Repeated exposure to irritants like smoke and dust, allergies, postnasal drip and gastroesophageal reflux disorder are all possible causes of chronic laryngitis, says C-Health.
