The Second World War is generally believed to have begun on September 1st, 1939 with the German invasion of Poland. The ending date of the war is not universally agreed upon, although some believed that the war stopped on 14th August 1945 (V-J Day or 'victory in Japan') while some say it ended on the 8th of May, 1945 (V-E Day or 'victory in Europe'). Japan formally surrendered on 2nd September 1945 and the Treaty of Peace with Japan was signed in 1951.
