What Do Echidnas Eat?

An Echidna is a mammal that looks like a cross between a porcupine and a hedgehog. It is actually a spiny anteater that actually lays eggs, the only other mammal known to do this is the duck-billed platypus. They have no teeth and eat ants, earthworms and termites using it's tongue.

Echidnas don't have teeth, they have sticky tongues! They eat ants, termites, and earthworms. The echidna has a 6 inch tongue! The tongue laps up the food and then hard pads on the tongue and on the roof of the mouth grind the food into a paste so the echidna can swallow the food.
There are several species of echidna and they are all carnivorous. They tend to eat small invertebrates including ants, termites, grubs and worms. You can find more information here: http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/internnsf/WebPages/BHAN-5357K5?open
