What Does a Comet Look like?

Comets generally look like faint smudges of light, usually bigger and brighter than the other objects in the night sky. Most comets seem to have tails extending away from their main body. They appear much like fireballs.

A comet consists of a body (nucleus), a tail and a coma. The body is made of rock, ice, dust and frozen gases. The tail is gases which are being released due to the solar radiation. The coma appears as a cloud of gas surrounding the comet. You can find more information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet
