What does "adios" mean in English?

The Spanish word "adiós" means "goodbye" or "farewell" in English. It is derived from the Spanish words "a Diós," which means "to God." It is related to the French word "adieu," the Italian word "addio" and the Portuguese word "adeus."

"Adiós" is also used in a few Spanish idiomatic phrases. "Decir los adioses" means the same thing as "to say one's goodbyes," and if a person says "decir adiós" to an object, it means that the person is saying goodbye to it. When someone begins a phrase with "Adiós a mi esperanza de," he means, "There go my hopes of" some otherwise desirable or hoped-for outcome.
