What does "eon" mean?

As defined by Dictionary.com, an eon can either refer to an indefinitely long time period such as an historical age, or specifically one billion years when used as a measurement of time in astronomy. When used geologically, it refers to the former definition, comprising two or more eras.

According to Wikipedia, for instance, the geological Phanerozoic Eon is divided into three eras: the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic, which together cover the years from 252.17 million years ago to 66 million years ago. While this span of 186.17 million years is impressive, it is but a fraction of the 1 billion years in an astronomical eon.
