Herpes refers to a viral infection that affects the genitals and tissues of the face (mouth and lips). It progresses through four characteristic stages namely prodrome, which is the first stage and characterized by an itching, tingling, burning or painful feeling, stage two is painful small red bumps and tiny, fluid-filled blisters. Stage three comes with crusts (crusty, yellowish, granular scabs) and ulcers. Lastly stage four which is the healing stage as crusts and ulcers are gradually replaced by new tissue.
