The designation "PC" listed after an attorney's name is an abbreviation for professional corporation. Some states allow professionals with ethical standards, such as doctors, accountants and lawyers, to enjoy the benefits of incorporation without interfering with their other obligations.
One of the benefits of forming a corporation is that individual shareholders and officers are not held personally liable for problems that arise within the business. But in the case of professions with a strict code of ethics, personal liability must not be removed from the practitioners. Thus, the PC protects individuals from the consequences of the misconduct of the other members of the corporation but not from their own.
