What Earth Forces Caused Mount Pinatubo to Erupt?

Answer

The first catalyst that led to the eruption of Mount Pinatubo was the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck about 100 kilometres northeast of Mount Pinatubo on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. This major earthquake shook and squeezed the Earth's crust under the volcano and magma rising toward the surface from more than 32 kilometres beneath Pinatubo set off smaller earthquakes that caused powerful steam blasts that ruptured three craters on the north flank of the volcano.
