What Happens at a Christening Ceremony?

Answer

When parents want their children to become Christians they have them christened. They select godparents who contribute to the child's growing up in the Christian faith. At the beginning of the ceremony the priest welcomes all the people present and asks the child's parents some questions so as to make known their decisions. By reading certain passages from the Holy Scriptures the priest explains what happens through christening. Then the parents and also the godparents make the sign of the cross on the child's forehead and after that the Creed is said in unison. Next comes the most important part of the ceremony where the priest pours water over the baby's head and blesses him or her. After the christening the newly christened child is anointed with chrisam, a mixture of olive oil and balm. Then the baby puts on a white christening robe, which is the symbol of the new life. After that the priest lights the christening candle. For this he uses the Easter candle, the symbol of Christ's resurrection. At the end of the ceremony the priest blesses the godparents, the parents and the child.
