In the time a hurricane spends forming over a body of water such as the ocean, it is gaining speed, depth, and power. Once the hurricane hits dry land, it will begin to slow down and eventually disappear. However, don't let this fool you. The hurricane is still capable of producing massive damage once it hits dry land. It takes days for the storm to finally snuff out when it is over dry land.
