What Is an Agreement to Stop Fighting Called?

An armistice is a temporary agreement to stop fighting or war. For instance, two opposing countries may agree to an armistice on a holy day.

A similar word, detente, is generally used when no physical fighting is involved. It means two parties agree to relax their strained relationship.
