What is "aqiqah"?

Answer

"Aqiqah" is the name of a special Muslim event where parents, family and friends get together seven days after a child's birth to celebrate and welcome the new baby. It is an Islamic cultural tradition, similar to a baby shower, but aqiqah isn't a religious requirement.

Guests bring presents to the aqiqah, while the family of the child provides the food. Traditionally, a third of the food is donated to the poor. One conventional element of the aqiqah is the baby's first haircut. Another tradition is announcing the baby's name formally during the aqiqah. Thus, the event is informally known as the "naming ceremony."
