What is the Atkins diet?

The Atkins diet focuses on low-carbohydrate foods by cutting back on breads, pasta, potatoes and sweets, according to WebMD. The idea for losing weight on the Atkins plan is to get the body to metabolize fat instead of carbs by drastically reducing carbohydrates. The first part of the diet includes lowering carb intake to 20 grams per day, getting protein from meat and eggs and eliminating grains.

Mayo Clinic states that the purpose of the Atkins diet is to lose weight and keep it off for a lifetime. The logistics of the plan include counting net carbohydrates, which is total carbs minus fiber content of foods. For instance, 1/2-cup serving of broccoli contains 2.3 grams of carbohydrates and 1.3 grams of fiber, which means broccoli has 1 gram of net carbohydrates.

The diet plan has four phases. The first part drastically reduces carbohydrates and increases protein in the diet. Mayo Clinic reveals that the second phase slowly adds back nutrient-rich carbs like nuts and seeds. This phase lasts until the patient is 10 pounds above the target weight. The third part allows for 10 more grams of carbs per week unless weight gain occurs. The fourth part is the lifetime maintenance portion of the Atkins diet.

U.S. News & World Report gave the Atkins diet 2.3 out of 5 stars. According to the media outlet, one major downside includes calorie restrictions, whereas weight loss occurs quickly at first.
