Christa McAuliffe was famous for being the first teacher in space. She was selected from more than eleven thousand applicants to participate in the NASA Teacher in Space Project. McAuliffe was killed in the Space Shuttle challenge disaster and after her death, schools and scholarships were named in her honour and she was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of honouring 2004.
