Named for the inventor of the loom technology used to simplify its creation, Jacquard fabric has designs woven into it rather than being dyed or painted on top. Two common types of fabric that can be created in this way are brocade and damask.

It should be noted that Jacquard weave refers specifically to fabrics that have been created on a Jacquard loom and not to the concept of patterned, woven fabric in general. Tapestry, brocade and damask have a history that predates the loom technology, and it was the desire to create these fabrics efficiently that led to the technology's creation.
