Memphis was a Milan-based group of young product and furniture designers led by Ettore Sottsass. It debuted in 1981 and subjugated the early 1980s design arena with its post-modernist approach.
Memphis design is a style of furniture design which can be described as post-modern, artistic and 'out of the box'. The design concept was the brainchild of Ettore Sottsass and his fellow designers, and is characterised by use of vivid colours and and abstract, assymetrical shapes. In the 80's, the Memphis design was very influential and sought to go against the conventional shapes, patterns, colours and textures of design.
