Shorthand typing is a system that uses short symbols with which typists write more quickly. It is most frequently used by stenographers and transcriptionists to record the spoken word.

Typists must take classes to learn the unique language of shorthand and how to use it. Stenographers and others who use shorthand type on a special keyboard that features the shorthand characters.
