What Is Surface Tension?

Answer

Surface tension is the phenomenon that makes the surface of a liquid act like a thin elastic sheet due to cohesive forces between the liquid molecules. The surface molecules are not surrounded by like molecules on all sides making them cohere more strongly to those directly associated with them on the surface, hence forming the thin film. This film makes it more difficult to move any object through the surface as opposed to moving it when it is completely submersed.

1.
the elasticlike force existing in the surface of a body, especially a liquid, tending to minimize the area of the surface, caused by asymmetries in the intermolecular forces between surface molecules.

Surface tension is an attractive property of the surface of a liquid.
It is the force that causes the surface of a portion of liquid to be attracted to another surface. Since liquid molecules typically do not have those of other substances between them, the force of attraction is greater. The force is also referred to as cohesion.
