"Cosmetology" is the art of applying cosmetics, but it is extended to also mean the work of those who style hair, do manicures and perform facials. Cosmetics are beauty products designed to enhance or improve a person's appearance.
Cosmetology comes from the Greek word "kosmeto," which means "adorned or arranged" and contains the suffix "-logy," which refers to a body of knowledge. The literal translation, then, is the body of knowledge pertaining to adorning or arranging. Cosmetologists generally go to school to learn how to cut and style hair, apply makeup, give facials, do wax treatments and perform manicures and pedicures. Many cosmetologists specialize in hair and facial treatments, while others focus on the skin.
