Fauvism is the style of les Fauves, a brief and loose group of early twentieth-century contemporary artists whose works stressed painterly virtues and strong colour over the figurative or realistic values reserved by Impressionism. It was the first of the avant-garde factions that thrived in France in the early twentieth century.
