What Is the Difference between Dexron II and III?

Answer

The difference between Dexron II and Dexron III is in the formulations. Dexron II had problems with corrosion occurring in the solder used in GM transmissions. The Dexron III formula has been modified to take care of that problem, as well as the the Dexron IID which tended to attract water molecules (hygroscopy.) The Dexron III can be used in all earlier transmissions that used previous formulations of Dexron.
