The Falkirk wheel is used for transporting boats from the Forth and Clyde canal to the Union canal and vice versa. The various parts of The Falkirk Wheel were constructed and then assembled, like one giant Meccano set, at Butterley Engineering’s Steelworks .in Derbyshire. It was opened in 2002 and the difference in the levels of the two canals at the wheel is 24 metres.
