# What Is the First Law of Motion?

Newton's first law of motion is know as the law of inertia. It says that an object will continue moving at the same speed and in the same direction until an outside force changes it. You can find more information here: http://teachertech.rice.edu/Participants/louviere/Newton/
Newton's first law of motion states that an object in a state of rest or uniform motion will remain in that state unless an external force is applied.
This is normally taken as the definition of inertia. If there is no net force acting on an object then the object will maintain a constant velocity. If that velocity is zero, then the object remains at rest.
