# What Is the Formula for Calculating Wind Chill?

Before 2001, the old wind chill formula was: T(wc) = 0.0817(3.71V**0.5 + 5.81 0.25V)(T 91.4) + 91.4. The wind chill measures the cooling effect of wind which increases the rate a person loses heat. On windy days the air feels colder and the body feels colder than the actual temperature outside. Volunteers were put in a wind tunnel and subjected to a few combinations of varying temperatures and wind to test these formulas. The new formula for calculating the wind chill in miles per hour (mph) is as follows, with V being the wind speed, and T being the temperature in Fahrenheit: wind chill temperature = 35.74 + 0.6215T 35.75 (V0.16) + 0.4275T (V0.16).
