Dreadlocks, also called locks, which form a shape of coil or rings on hair. These have become so much associated with Rastafarian culture, which is, in turn, associated with smoking gang. New-generation Rastafarians will tell the culture of locked hair came, originally, from Africa , but any knowledge beyond the continent that locks came from is unknown.

There are multiple accounts of the history of dreadlocks. It is said that they date back to East Africa where some communities wore them ever since their existence. It is also suggested that they originated in ancient Egypt where the Egyptians wore locked hairstyles and wigs. Different cultures wore them for different reasons, some for religious beliefs and others have them for beauty purposes. Today, people have them on for the same reasons as the early days.
