A Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is an area in which only the cleanest vehicles are allowed unrestricted entry, so as to reduce exhaust emissions from road transport and improve local air quality. Non-compliant vehicles entering the LEZ are usually targeted with penalty fines. The first LEZ in the UK was established in London on 4th February 2008 following a 2003 study that assessed its likely costs and benefits and how it could be implemented.
