What is the Purpose of a Wedding Garter?

Answer

The purpose of a wedding garter is to follow the American tradition that the bride and the groom were supposed to consummate on their wedding night. To ensure this was done some wedding attendees would follow the couple into the room to be witnesses and take the garter out with them to show the others proof of consummation. Today it is equivalent to the bride tossing the bouquet and the man who catches the garter is said to have good luck.
