Titian, or Tiziano Vecellio, studied and worked in Venice during the High Renaissance period. He practiced several forms during his career, including altarpieces, frescoes and portraiture. He was famous during his lifetime, earning an entry into the "Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects," a biographical work written by Giorgio Vasari, one of his contemporaries.
